Machine Tool Volumetric Ballbar Test

A volumetric ball bar test is a method for calibrating machine tools by measuring the deviations from ideal circular motion when the machine moves in two axes. This test utilizes a ball bar, a precision device with a known length, to detect errors in the machine's motion and identify potential issues with its accuracy.

Renishaw QC-20W Wireless Ballbar System

Overview:
The QC-20W ballbar is a diagnostic tool used to check the circularity and motion accuracy of CNC machines. It helps identify geometric, dynamic, and control-related errors quickly and accurately.

Key Specifications:

  • Measurement Range: redius 50 mm to 300 mm.
  • Resolution: 1 μm
  • Accuracy: ±0.5 μm
  • Connectivity: Wireless (Bluetooth)
  • Software: Compatible with Renishaw Ballbar20 & CARTO

Accuracy Test & Procedure:

  1. Mount QC-20W between machine spindle and table using magnetic centering mounts.
  2. Run circular interpolation program in X-Y, X-Z, or Y-Z planes.
  3. Capture deviation data during circular motion.
  4. Analyze results for squareness, backlash, reversal spikes, servo mismatch, etc.
  5. Identify root causes and tune CNC parameters or mechanical components as required.
  6. Re-run test to validate improved machine performance.

Applicable Machine Types:

  • All types of machine tools.

Result:
Quick diagnosis of machine health, enhanced motion accuracy, and improved part quality through proactive maintenance.
